Cliques
&
Clubs
What's a web clique? Back in the Geocities era, a clique was a tiny interest-based club you could join just by copying a snippet of text or a graphic onto your page. No application. No approval committee. Just vibes and a shared interest — "I love cats," "I'm a Pisces," "I make pixel art." They connected strangers across the web through common ground, the same way webrings connected whole sites. Cliques were casual, personal, and a little silly in the best way. They still exist! Neocities brought them back.
What's the difference between a clique and a webring? A webring links a chain of whole websites together (← prev | next →). A clique is just a badge of identity — you display it because it's true about you, not because it routes traffic. Think of webrings as roads and cliques as bumper stickers. ✨
